Repels Insects

Repels Insects

Outdoor insects are more prevalent in the summer. Generally, Insect bites consist of saliva, protein and other harmful substances which may result in many allergic reactions. The bite area on the victim’s body is swells and becomes pinkish in color.

How are Insects Repelled?
Insects can be repelled by using insecticides and DEET, or by products that contain certain natural oils as insect repellents. Insect repellents can be applied directly to the body or to clothing, shoes, tents, and mosquito nets to increase the repulsion against outdoor insects.

Use of DEET and insecticides:
Insecticides like Permethrin can be used to repel insects. Permethrin is highly effective against ticks and mites, but at the same time may have harmful side effects for humans and animals.

The chemical name of DEET is N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide or diethytoluamide in short. The molecular formula of DEET is C12H17NO. DEET repels mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods when applied to skin or clothing. DEET contains chemicals which make insects either die or make them unconscious. It has proven to be a decent mosquito repellent. The biggest disadvantage with DEET is that it is a toxic substance. Case reports of toxicity from DEET have been well documented in the medical literature and range from rashes, dizziness, headache, nausea and in rare cases death.  In addition, several of the reported cases of significant toxicity from DEET are in children under the age of eight.

Use of Natural Oil as Insect Repellent:
Natural insect repelling oils are effective against mosquitoes and other insects. The distinctive scent of certain oils make it difficult for insects to locate a host. The biggest advantage of using natural oils as insect repellents is that they have no known side effects and are deemed safe.  Moreover natural repellents use water as a carrier, as compared to alcohol which is used in DEET. The natural insect repellents are safe to use for all ages and pets.
